The captain in the poem refers to Abraham Lincoln who is the captain of the ship, representing the United States of America: The following lines are from the first out of three stanzas. "O Captain! My Captain!" is a poem written in 1865 by Walt Whitman, about the death of American president Abraham Lincoln. Later he has the students stand on his desk in order to look at the world in a different way. In another class Keating instructs his pupils to rip the introduction out of their books, to the amazement of one of his colleagues. He tells the students that they may call him " O Captain! My Captain!", in reference to a Walt Whitman poem, if they feel daring. Employed at the very traditional Welton school which is based on the four principles "Tradition, Honor, Discipline, and Excellence" his teaching methods are unorthodox, including taking them out of the classroom to focus on the idea of carpe diem. Set in 1959, Dead Poets Society tells the story of the English professor John Keating (Robin Williams) who inspires his students to the love of poetry and to seize the day. Trying to lead it in a meaningful, passionate, and responsible way. And ever since I´ve been writing the script of my own life. Some months later I left Germany and went to the States to work for Disney. There was a unique energy, power, and inspiration in those dialogues and words which gave me the courage to stand up for what I wanted. And that it would have a great influence on my whole life. Immediately in this very moment I realized that this film is special, very special to me. In the film I heard for the first time the words " Carpe diem" (seize the day). When I was a young man at the age of 20, I saw Dead Poets Society in autumn 1989. ![]() Caused by their plot, their messages, their emotions, and their actors. ![]() It is one of those films which have the power to change your life. ![]() The one film of Robin Williams which went under my skin like none before is Dead Poets Society. Robin Williams, who on August 11 was found dead at his home in Northern California was a remarkable actor, genius, and man whose movies have inspired my whole life (and I think I saw most of them).
